In the global hit animation “Neon Genesis Evangelion”, Hakone is the model for the dystopian city of Tokyo-3, and many scenes in the anime were inspired by actual views around Hakone.
In 2020, just before the release of the final film in the series called “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time”, Hakone held a collaboration event called “Evangelion x Hakone 2020: Meet Evangelion in Hakone”.
